Saraswati is the beautiful goddess of learning or lore. All those who worship her is believed to confer Wisdom and Learning. as goodnes of music and poetry she is revered alike by brahmans and buddhists. She is depicted in varouis forms. Usually she is sitting on a lotus pedestal in an artistic or beautiful pose, one foot hanging down while the other folded underneath her. Saraswati plays veena / bina or one-stringed lute.

In Medieval Nepal, she was very popular. On the shri Panchami day which heralds the beginning of spring, her shrine on the hilltop of swayambhunath is visited by a large number of devotees.
